Methacton Madness

What in the world went on Tuesday after the Methacton School Board meeting?
I've seen the video tape. A visibly upset Jim Van Horn, that's school board president Van Horn, is seen coming full steam at the camera, which I'm told was operated by perennial pain in the side of Van Horn, Jim Mollick.
Van Horn can clearly be heard saying that video taping after a meeting is over is a no-no. The next thing you see is the camera going haywire so we're not real sure what happened next.
Van Horn has simply said he was not charged with assault by state police and he won't comment further.
I had a couple of voice mails waiting for me Wednesday morning when I got in. One person was absolutely appalled at what she called an 'unprovoked attack'
Lower Providence Supervisor Craig Dininny said Van Horn should resign.
From what I saw on the video tape, whether an assault occurred or not, Van Horn should be able to have a little more self control. He's a public figure, and has been one for some years. I agree with Dininny to a certain extent. Van Horn should step down, at least from the president's seat. I don't know if he needs to resign, but the president's gavel should be passed along to someone else.

WOW! Unbelievable, the pot calling the kettle black. If anyone should resign from public office it should be Craig Dininny. I attended the public hearing of the ARC Ordinance and Mr. Dininny was a disgrace to his office. Gaveling down the public, intimidating them with uniformed policemen called up to the front of the auditorium. What's next, the canine unit. Why does he need police protection at public meetings anyway? Maybe Mr. Molick needs police protection at the School Board meetings, who knows!

Good Lord, maybe both Dininny and Van Horne should both resign and do us taxpayers a favor. No such luck I guess. When are the voters going to throw these guys out of office, they both have been there way toooo long!

Mr. Huskey, I understand that a Zoning Board member was chalanged in Tuesdays Zoning Board meeting. Apparently she had voiced her opinion at a Supervisors meeting on the ARC presentation and was on the Townships Cable Channel stating how great this would be for Lower Providence Township. I believe this is an Ethics Code Violation and shopuld be challenged by someone. She should be made to stand down, and not embarrass the Zoning Board and Township. This is going to come back and haunt someone in more challanges. Bite the bullet lady and recuse yourself.

Ah yes, Mr. Dininney the savior of Lower Providence, and now the School Board. Looks like he setting his sites on running for Van Horns job next term. In the committe mans race he thumped you pretty good. Maybe L.P. should change from Second Class Township to Borough then the people could call you Mayor.

Anonymous said...

After hearing about the comment that Mr.Dininny has made regarding the resignation of Mr.VanHorn, I would like to know how he managed to become the ethics spokesman for our township. Is it all possible that Mr. Dininny has gotten a little to big for his britches and is trying to reinvent himself for another run for Supervisor. Maybe he should look at his ethics first and clean up his house before pointing the finger at anyone else. Craig, just how badly did you lose in your last committee race to Mr VanHorn? To the point, the voters are sick of your attitude and treatment towards them plus your history of bending over backwards to appease the developers. Craig; listen to us, we want a change in 2009.

Anonymous said...

Whoa! How did this turn from a story about a school board meeting to LP supervisors and ZHB people? Why did the T-H interview Dininny anyway? Dinniny and VanHorn are both politicians who happen to have read the latest book on how to keep control of your municipal governments--don't ask (us any questions), don't tell (the residents what we are up to). If residents ask, gavel them down.

I saw the Van Horn video and I must say I found it very disturbing. Mr. Van Horn why didn't you simply walk away? You didn't, you came from the other side of the room and attacked Dr. Mollick. We all know about the "You Tube" videos of Mr. Van Horn in the past losing his temper on other residents not just this one. I hope Mr. Van Horn can realize his short commings and seek help in managing his anger.
As for Methacton, It prides itself as an institution of learning free of agression by one student on another. A montra that is must for a civilized society. If Bullies are not allowed in the school yard then they must not be allowed in the boardroom.
Mr. Van Horn take the right path this time, just walk away.
Do the right thing if not for yourself please do it for the children you are sworn the serve, they deserve better. I wish you well.

All of the previous comments are from people who apparently refuse to act professionally in a public forum, shout out responses and are occasionally too emotional. That is why police protection is needed. As far as the pot calling the kettle black, Mr. Dininny is one of the most professional supervisors in the county. Maybe its time you guys go visit another municiaplaity or Trappe borough and see how other supervisors conduct their meetings. You will be surprised. You guys sound like a bunch of whining losers- if I cannot win, then I will take my ball and go home. I am not justifying what Mr. Van horn did was right- he should resign but what does that have to do with a supervisor giving his opinion. Stick to the subject of the blog or go home and play with your ball.

I commend you Stan. You didn't shy away from this issue. You put the video on your web site. A picture is worth a thousand words. As a parent of a Methacton student and not able to attend MSD meetings. Seems to me their meetings should be on tv now. We have a right to see how the elected officials responsible for my largest tax bill act and carry out school district business. I say all hail President Barbone!

Unreal!

Spin is alive and well in Lower Providence. Van Horn attacks someone and by the way, Dininny should resign. Van Horn attacks someone and by the way, Dininny is on a power trip. Van Horn attacks someone and by the way, "a member" should recuse herself from the ARC hearing. There is no reason to hide behind inuendo, I was there. It is on public record, they did not challenge a member, they challenged Janice Kearney.

A. Mr. Van Horn should resign from public office. Assualting someone is inexcusable in any venue, especially by an elected official. I have heard for years that this man threatens people. He rules this board with threats and verbal assualts. Even sitting board members are afraid that he will attack them. One carries mace to every meeting. Should residents be nervous now to go into a school board meeting and ask questions?

B. Mr. Dininny gaveled an ex-solicitor that was clearly out of order at the meeting. The man should know when it is appropriate to speak at a structured public meeting and that was not the time.

If you don't like Dininny's politics or don't like the way things are being run, then run against him in '08. Ad hoc committees, FOLP meetings and Stan's Blog might be a good place to hide, but if you want to get something done, please run! I won't vote for you, but you never know. I personally think that the guy is doing a hell of a job.

C. As far as Janice Kearney, she was given sound advice in a public forum by both the Township Solicitor and by the Zoning Hearing Board Solicitor. In their legal opinion, she is doing nothing wrong and she wishes to stay. Mr. Brown, an outspoken critic of the ARC overlay, has a brother-in-law sitting on the Zoning Hearing Board also. Should he recuse himself as well?

D. Let's hope to god that this Overlay Ordinance challenge is thrown out. Does anyone realize that if the ARC is turned away, we are going to be stuck with an enormous residential developement in Lower Providence. Make no mistake, 250 residential homes will be planted there. I am sure that the residents in the peninsula will love it!!

Mr. Huskey, Thank you for the front page coverage of the school board meeting. A question to you would be why did your reporter interview the chairman of L.P Supervisors. He was not present at the meeting. He did not see the altercation. A member of the board held her comments until she heard the facts, and she was there. Of course Craig Dininny covered his butt by using the word "allegedly" putting his hands on a tax-paying resident. I guess it's ok to grab a resident who is not paying his or her taxes. Would it not been better for you to wait until you heard from the district attorneys office before publishing. You said it yourself that Mr Van Horn and Mr. Mollick were not the best of friends. I guess it's ok to verbally attack a resident, just don't put your hands on them. I believe the first blog got it right, with the pot and kettle theory. What goes around comes around.

Anonymous said...

if by some twist of logic Mrs Kearney should recuse herself then it stands to reason that the guy on the ZHB who is Rick Brown's brother in law (and presumably as against ARC as he is) should also recuse himself, that makes just about as much sense as asking her to. Then again now that the election is over Rick will probably switch sides again and wind up right back where he started - in support of ARC.

C'mon guys... Van Horn should resign from his post and make a public apology to all. His behavior was unacceptable, but not much different from the way he has acted the entire time he has been there. The guy bullies everyone.

The only reason he gets re-elected is because he runs on both the REP and DEM side of the ballot (which is a joke in itself) so gets all the votes from people pulling straight party.

He should absolutely be charged with assault as well.

Van Horn step down/resign. Your puppet Barbone will still fight for your causes!

Where do you think our kids are learning bullying from? Adults! School board members all over Montgomery county resort to bullying- ridicule, using the police to intimidate, unfair allocation of resources, and stonewalling- to get their way. The behaviour is passed on to administrators who bully teachers who bully children who bully other children. Our children are only learning what they see in society.

After reading the article in today's Times Herald regarding Ms. Kearney's refusal to recluse herself from a possible conflict of interest situation on the ZHB is acting in very bad faith and shows the negative attitude that Lower Providence Officials have towards our voters. Ms. Kearny, I am sure this refusal will surface again in the near future if you decide to run for elected office. There are four votes in my house that will go to anyone but you(or Mr. Dininney) in 2009. Ms. Kearney, do the proper thing and recluse yourself now and protect your reputation as an honest official.

I believe that some people wonder why Mr. Dininnys opinion is the only one that counts. Why is it that your reporter never interviews the other sitting Supervisors? Can they talk, or do they just wiggle their heads. Aboout Dininney being a professional, maybe he should visit other municipalities, not necessarily Trappe or Skippack. Who knows who pulls his strings.

Van Horn tackles Mollick after a SCHOOL BOARD MEETING and there is nothing but opinion here about Dininney. Dininney gives his opinion and you tear him up for it. It's no wonder L.P. is the laughing stock of the area. Now thanks to Jim Van Horn so is Methacton! YOU KNOW WHAT, DININNEY IS RIGHT, VAN HORN MUST GO!

Dininney for mayor.........has a nice ring to it.

What does the rest of the school board think about their President and his actions? Leave school business where it belongs at the school. If I acted the way Van Horn did I would be fired. What does Methacton's policy state...fighting is ok as long as your on the school board? I want to hear the official position of Methacton School District.

Anonymous said...

Let me just say as a current student of methacton high school i am absolutely disgusted with this video. We are brain washed day in and day out about not bullying other students. Yet its okay for the PRESIDENT of the Methacton school board to do it. Thats ridiculous!!!! Mr. Vanhorn does not know the students of methacton. Nor does he care about us. I have never seen mr. Vanhorn in the school. He cares only about his objectives..Also Give us lights at MHS!!!! its embarrasing watching the band kids practice in the dark with flashlights....Lets get someone who cares about the students on the school board! I also wonder how many school functions mr. Vanhorn attends....

Stan..Neither VanHorn or Dininny should step down from their present post. A limited time set for all requests to speak & the person's name should be posted along with the Agenda PRIOR to the meetings, which can include photo ops. Meetings should not be longer than (4) hours. Now, some Residents , usually trying to make their case, no matter what, at the School Board Meetings will insist their way is correct over and over again. Long speeches about their qualifications will usually not help to get their point across. We have hecklers at our Board Meetings and at times, offensive behavior is demonstrated in order to get recognition...childish. As to mace being carried...great I carry it at all times...no big deal. Is it possible the person that said she/he carries it because of fear??? of what??? This person has a problem that probably is because he/she is not suited for the position they are presently in. Sorry about that...try some other job volunteers are in great demand.

Who can tell where Rick Brown is on the ARC?!. This guys flip flops more than Free Willy.
Mr. Brown WAS on the Board in 2003 when this property was rezoned to R2. Mr. Brown DID VOTE YES to have this property rezoned. This was a great deal for the Archdiocese, but a really bad deal for the residents. Instead of blaming Brown for helping rezone this (and leaving us in fear of another large McHousing development), we are going to trash Dininny for helping along a creative solution to a real problem.
If you live within 5 miles of this thing, you had better get to all of the Zoning Hearing Board Meetings and speak up. If the ARC doesn't develop the lot, I am sure Toll Brothers will!!!

Does anyone blame Doug Hager and the rest of the Lower Providence Republican Committee for keeping this guy around so long. They rubber stamp him and his school board picks every time, despite his reputation of being a threatening tyrant and a bully. If these are the decisions that other Republican Committees are making throughout the county, it's no wonder that we lost 5 county seats.
Hager should resign along with Van Horn.

How did a thread about the Methacton school board turn into yet another undeserved thrashing of LP? LP did not raise taxes for the 9th year running, the county lowered taxes...and the school board? Raised them. Now THERE'S a group that deserves bad press and questions at their meetings.

First folks complain that township meetings run too late & then they complain that they didn't get to hog the floor for a half hour each, regurgitating the same stuff over and over. There has to be some protocol and Dininny gets beat up for enforcing it. Residents should be thankful they get their 3 mins (or more) on the township's floor; the school board gives them zippo and attacks if you question or oppose them.

For those who don't recognize good government when they see it, they are, to paraphrase Southwest Airlines, "free to move about the County." How'd you like to be living in Limerick with the new outlets these days?

Anonymous said...

Stan, Here's a solution---Have them all resign and start from scratch. Hey Dolphin eye, is he doing a great job for you also? Why is it that Toll Brothers get the blame for everything? How many ordinances were changed for other builders in L.P.? Let's put this to bed and maybe take The eye's position and wait until 09. Is it possible that another public official carrys a firearm strapped to their leg at public meetings? Who knows enough is enough. I'll hide just like you Mr. Eye and sign off....The Mole

Dear Mr. Huskey. If I read your publication of 11-23-07 by Mr. Carl Rotenberg correctly it has solicitor Onorato asking the zoning board for time to research the revevant issues on Ms. Kearney recusing herself. Zoning solicitor Sheridan said Kearneys recusal was "not a decision for the board to make".
As the Dolphin suggest in his blog of 11-22-07 that both solicitors gave their legal opinion. Tell me when the legal opinion was given. Both solicitors CYA and I do not blame them. Brothers may think alike, but I doubt if brother-in laws do. Thank you for listening to a first timer. Name withheld due to the possibility of harassement.

Now that Bud's Bar has closed it's doors and sold it's liquor license, what ordinance will Mr. Dininny and his gang of two now change to support the big name contrator who will be developing that property. Frankly I can't wait for 2009 for a change and neither can our honest citizens in LPT!

Stan, According to the Bicentennial book on Lower Providence, Pine Hill Farm on Pinetown Road built in 1761 going. The Beswick Home on Egypt Road gone. Now Jack's Tavern (Buds Bar) built prior to 1776 next with the wrecking ball. Thank you Supervisors for removing the history from this Township. It will be interesting to see who the buyer is.

Anonymous said...

Maybe they could move Bud's Bar to the ARC site, as a sort of living history exhibit!

On a serious note, I don't understand why people spend so much time worrying about what the supervisors and the ZHB do, when most of their tax money goes to the school district. If people started watching the school board with a quarter of the attention they pay to the supervisors, Methacton Madness might end.

Hey Celtic Warrior, good government? Aren’t you the tempy supervisor who brought CVS and Commerce Bank to the Village of Audubon. My friends tell me you are the infamous Janice Kearney, could it be they are right? If so maybe you belong in Limerick with the rest of the developer minded supervisors. I hear they can’t print building permits fast enough!

Ok, so VAN HORN stepped down as president. Does that really help the school board as most of the other members are his puppets. Also I did not see the news of him stepping down anywhere on the timesherald site, did I miss it? Why hasn't Stan blogged about it. Stan, let's have some follow up now and then? news like this, Gulotta stealing his paycheck, etc... need follow-up!!

Methacton School District has new leaders (School Board). Remember, becareful what you wish for...it could be a very muddy situation. Uninformed leaders, sometimes, can be very costly. VanHorn is gone, but Mollick still remains. He now seems to be giving Worcester Twp a mouth full of his expert opinion on how/when/why the Township should be run...good luck! Dininny remains, and is up for election. Well, if he does not make it, there is the Zoning Board that is the catchall...Read the minutes and you will notice the patern. New blood is needed, but who in the world would put in the time required and take the guff?

Anonymous said...

um... I'm an LP resident who just stumbled upon this blog and I'm ashamed to admit that I read it. It was like a slow motion train wreck-- can't turn away and can't get it over with fast enough.
Anyway, I have a couple of observations as an honest non-participant observer with just interest in seeing what's best for my community...
I know just enough about the things mentioned here to know that there's some distortion going on here in self-serving interests of expressing personal opinions. GREAT! That's what blogs and comments are for-- opinions.
But nonetheless reading this begs the question, Who is this for? You do realize that no one's reading this except those writing it? And except for me, an accidental visitor, I suspect that most of you know who you are. Why don't you just call each other up and shout insults into the phone the old fashioned way? It seems like it'd be more honest. In any case, I hope no one thinks that voters are going to review this page before stepping into the booth.
Which brings me to my last point... Who voted for these people you all hate so much? I bet it wasn't your neighbors, because chances are they didn't vote at all. Why are you directing all your passions on the current crop of politicians? Isn't the real problem the crop of voters? Why don't you direct some of that passion (in a less negative way, I would suggest) on your fellow citizens, who chose to accept and promote government "as is" through their complacency and in so doing force the rest of us to deal with it as well.

Anonymous said...

I agree, Kearney should resign as well as Van Horn. Women do not belong in government positions. They make too many decisions based on emotion instead of logic.

Anonymous said...

To the accidntial visitor who stumbled onto Stan's Blog, people can't call each other on the phone there's a thing called called ID. By using the blog you can hide behind the anonymous label. L.P.needs more people to get involved to run-but- that could be dangerous. When you only have two people run for office you get just that -two bodies with no brains. L.P. have had many women on various boards that had a lot of common sense and logic. Then again, there are a lot of "yes sir boss" is'nt that right CD. And, you are correct when you say the voter has to get off their posterior in order to make anything work correctly. Maybe next election will not see the same old, same old candidates.

Anonymous said...

Oh of COURSE. A man would never do something based purely on emotion. It must have been Van Horn's public display of cool reason and logic that made the 11 o'clock news.

Anonymous said...

There is another.

Anonymous said...

If the accidential visitor who stumbled onto your web site wants to see ego he or she should attend a L.P. meeting. You will see a little fat guy who thinks he's Caesar playing the roll of a marionette, pulling the strings of two other Supervisors. It's called control, and I am surprised that Mr. ex-cop sits there and allows it to happen. He tells everyone how great of a cop he USED to be,but,if this is true he should use his own mind, not Caesars.

Anonymous said...

A comment was made about the same old candidates running... 2009 will surprise a lot of the "same as usual" politicians will some new and capable people that should have the "gang of three" shaking in their boots! Film at eleven people.

Anonymous said...

What are you talkin about Yoda, I don't get it!

Anonymous said...

Hey Stan,

Little -> Fat -> Ceaser.

Way to attack the issues!

Look back to some CVS votes. You'll see that Sassu and Dininny don't always agree.

I also seem to remember a curb vote where Dininny was on the down side of a curb ordinance vote. Seems Mrs. Altieri thinks granite is a better alternative to belgium block.

I really don't understand why these guys don't just call the Supervisors. Just call them on the phone and ask what is going on.

As far as the 3 "shaking in their boots", if you got have the time to talk to Mrs. Altieri, Mr. Dininny or Mr. Sassu, you'll come to realize that it is never about them. Never. It's always about the Township. Always.

Do yourself a favor and don't drink the poison Koolaide.

Educate yourself.

Anonymous said...

I read with much amusement the last Blog regarding Mrs. Altieri's supposedly diasagreement with Mr. Dininny over granite curbing versus belgium block curbing. If this is the case, would someone please explain to me how an ex-Irish Shop owner can be such an expert on road construction materail? Maybe she should spend a little more time in her new shop in Collegeville and loan them her expertise.

The agenda for Thursday's meeting has a waiver for the construction of a 90ft x50ft Boccee court cover, This cover has been on for quite some time. Why did the township do the work and then approve it. Who did the contract work on this project? Who voted to have this work done? Also can we please have someone other than Mr. Sassu do the presentations to the police department, the chief knows his men better than anyone, and we will not have to listen about Sassu's past lifetime as a super cop in Conshohocken.

Mr. Huskey: Since tomorrow's meeting of the Lower Providence Board of Supervisors is the last meeting of the year. I would like to encourage all our residents to attend this meeting. Many who have read these blogs but never attended a BOS meeting have no idea of what they are missing by not getting involved. They will also have a much better understanding as to why so many residents are extremely upset with our current elected officials and Manager. Please attend.

So many residents upset- hogwash. Only the democrats are upset because the township is being run as it should- professionally. Take your gripes to Limerick- where the real problems are. 33 lawsuits against Limerick Township last year, a traffic nightmare with the new outlet stores, a recent tax increase and development run amok. You constant whiners need to get the hell out of Lower Providence Township and let the BOS do their job. By the way, the silent majority speaks in Lower Providence so go pound sand so Stan can send Carl to Limerick where the real stupid municipal problems are.

By all means, please attend a BOS meeting. Hopefully you will have also attended a Methacton SB meeting and will be able to see the vast differences between the two. Nobody ever got beat up at a township meeting for taping. As for 'so many residents being extremely upset'...yeah right. It's the same tiny bunch of malcontents with nothing better to do who typically show up on any given night.

Has anybody brought up the term chronyism yet? Be sure to attend next Thursday's BOS meeting to see who will be appointed to the ZHB. Hint...he now serves on the P&R Board and should fit in with the other two "individuals" who have recently been appointed. Film at eleven folks. The Professor

The re-organization meeting will take place on the first Monday of January that would be the 7th. The second class code states thats when it will be. It's amazing that your crystal ball tells you in advance what will be in L.P. I do not believe that our intelligent board of Supervisors would appoint someone who is not versed on the ordinances and codes to an important position as the Zoning Hearing Board. I do know that the party who term is up for re-appointment has all of the above qualities, and if she does not get the appointment I will agree with your comment about chronyism. In the future please get you dates correct,I would hate to have you as my professor or confessor.

Of course George Bernard Shaw said it best in this quote, "Democracy is a device that ensures we shall be governed no better than we deserve." I was just informed this morning of the slight given to Mrs. McFarland by our BOS. I hope these three Supervisors, led by Boss Dininny are able to sleep nights. If not I will give them some more food for thought by making three more predictions from my many sources available in the township.(1) There will be one Supervisor resigning in 2008. (2) Another Supervisor will have severe marital problems resulting from unethical conduct in 2008. (3) There will be a Township audit/investigation by a yet unnamed federal agency sometime summer/fall of 2008. Investigation will be more intensive than the one several years ago. More later.
