Where do you stand?

Election Day is almost here and I think there are historical numbers of people who have not made up their minds about who to vote for in this historical election.
So, for those of you still on the fence I would suggest it comes down to values. You can throw in some morals there too if you want, but I personally have a hard time throwing that stone.
So here's where I stand.
I don't want government getting any bigger than it is.
I don't think our government should pay for everyone's health insurance. I think people should work hard for what they get in life. And no, I'm not against health care for the poor...we already have it.
I don't think we should run from Iraq because I do believe that if we don't take the fight to them, they'll bring the fight right back here to us. Check out the movie Obsession.
I don't want a redistribution of wealth. That's called socialism. We have done just fine with our capitalist society. I don't think I should help out 'those behind me.' I think those behind me should work their tails off to catch up with me. Trust me, it really wouldn't take that long.
When I put it down on paper my choice for president becomes crystal clear. John McCain.
Where do you stand?

I'm with you Stan- I can not see how the "Talking Heads" can justify the $$$$$$$$$$$ etc. that will be needed for all the "I've got a dream" that is being promised by Obama. I have always worked with a budget and that figure was an estimate only and did not mean all the money had to be spent, but it was based on $ coming vs $ needed going out. McCain all the way for all (5) of us.

Do you think Nobama will get it back for me.

Thanks to Mr. Frank, and his fannie mae friends I don't believe it will happen.

Hey Stan --

Whatever happened to "A journalist's job is to comfort the afflicted and afflict the comfortable"? Seems somewhere along the line you figured that doesn't work for you.

Just wondering, since you seem so cozy with the guy who's going to protect all the billionaires while screwing the middle class. The guy who didn't once mention the words "middle class" in any of his three debates. The guy who's going to tax our health benefits, let alone trying to get more people covered.

I don't know Stan, seems like all you want to do is parrot the scare lines of the same propaganda guys who gave us eight miserable years of George Bush.

Go that way if it makes you happy, but more likely it seems like a way that'll make your bosses happy while it keeps you stuck in the same middle-class bind that we're all experiencing. How's that 401k doing?

See you at the polls,

There's only one thing worse than the Democrat's tax and spend philosophy. That's the Republican's borrow and spend philosophy. We're ptobably going to finish the Bush administration with an $11 Trillion debt and a $1 Trillion national deficit. So, naturally, what are we talking about? Tax cuts! I hate both candidates but I've decided to vote for the candidate opposite Pat Robertson and Jimmy Donson's endorsement: Obama.

When asked about "income redistribution" in an interview, Joe Biden replied that it was time to be patriotic.

Then in another interview, 5 HOURS later, he replied, I don't believe in income redistribution.

If I need to apologize I will, but I don't feel that after struggling, sacrificing, and breaking my back to provide for my family, AND to create jobs for people in the area, that the government should take it upon themselves to redistribute MY income because other people are adverse to the same risks I (and numerous others) have taken to chase down THEIR American dreams.

I don't feel that it's patriotic to help pay for the lack of others ambition.

Protecting the billioniares?? Please. Try folks who earn $200,000.

Screwing the middle class??? PLEASE!!! Your taxes have been lower than they have ever been.

You want Bush's failed economic policies? Google Commodity Futures Moderization Act, and find out who's policy's really failed us.

This was the catalyst to our economic problems today. Everyone shares the blame.

Top down vs Bottom up is the fundamental difference in the party.

I tend to believe (because I have witnessed it), that the people on the bottom are there because thats where they want to be. Most are not on the bottom because of circumstance. They are there because they do nothing about those circumstances.

These are not the type of people that can drive an economy. Giving them money to do so will not change that.

As far as PA Dems comment about your responsibility as a journalist Stan...

I think most of us get the fact that in this forum, you are not a jounalist, rather a private citizen wishing to express his own opinion, free from corporate oversight and responsibility to an employer.

By reading here I consume your thoughts and opinion within those parameters and without any judgement of what you do for a living.

I think it's the "fair" thing to do. Like THAT has anything to do with it :)

Today on my way to lunch I passed a homeless guy with a sign the read "Vote Obama, I need the money." I laughed.

Once in the restaurant my server had on a "Obama 08" tie, again I laughed..just imagine the coincidence.

When the bill came I decided not to tip the server and explained to him that I was exploring the Obama redistribution of wealth concept. He stood there in disbelief while I told him that I was going to redistribute his tip to someone who I deemed more in need--the homeless guy outside. The server angrily stormed from my sight.

I went outside, gave the homeless guy $10 and told him to thank the server inside, as I decided he could use the money more. The homeless guy was grateful.

At the end of my rather unscientific redistribution experiment, I realized the homeless guy was grateful for the money he did not earn, but the waiter was pretty angry that I gave away the money he did earn even though the actual recipient deserved money more.

I guess redistribution of wealth is an easier thing to swallow in concept than in practical application.

Montco PA Dem said...

Except, DE, your entire example is based on a lie.

Nobody from the Obama campaign ever said anything about "redistributing wealth." What Obama said -- and what I agree with wholeheartedly -- is that we need to "spread the wealth around." Which is something altogether different.

That means we improve conditions and opportunities for the vast majority of Americans, so that all of us can improve where we stand, instead of just the very wealthiest of those among us. We give a tax cut to the middle class instead of billionaires. And yes, we roll back the tax bracket on people making a quarter mil a year to the point where they were in the Clinton administration. If that's a hardship for you or for riggstad who posted above you, well I'll gladly change places.

But a middle-class tax cut is gonna help me. And my neighbors. And my neighbors' neighbors...and it's going to give us the same advantages tax-wise that the elite Republican fatcats have been getting handed to them for the last eight years. I call that spreading the wealth around.

And I call it about time, too.

Sarah Palin's War on Science The GOP ticket's appalling contempt for knowledge and learning.
By Christopher Hitchens Posted Monday, Oct. 27, 2008, at 11:43 AM ET

In an election that has been fought on an astoundingly low cultural and intellectual level, with both candidates pretending that tax cuts can go like peaches and cream with the staggering new levels of federal deficit, and paltry charges being traded in petty ways, and with Joe the Plumber becoming the emblematic stupidity of the campaign, it didn't seem possible that things could go any lower or get any dumber. But they did last Friday, when, at a speech in Pittsburgh, Gov. Sarah Palin denounced wasteful expenditure on fruit-fly research, adding for good xenophobic and anti-elitist measure that some of this research took place "in Paris, France" and winding up with a folksy "I kid you not."

It was in 1933 that Thomas Hunt Morgan won a Nobel Prize for showing that genes are passed on by way of chromosomes. The experimental creature that he employed in the making of this great discovery was the Drosophila melanogaster, or fruit fly. Scientists of various sorts continue to find it a very useful resource, since it can be easily and plentifully "cultured" in a laboratory, has a very short generation time, and displays a great variety of mutation. This makes it useful in studying disease, and since Gov. Palin was in Pittsburgh to talk about her signature "issue" of disability and special needs, she might even have had some researcher tell her that there is a Drosophila-based center for research into autism at the University of North Carolina. The fruit fly can also be a menace to American agriculture, so any financing of research into its habits and mutations is money well-spent. It's especially ridiculous and unfortunate that the governor chose to make such a fool of herself in Pittsburgh, a great city that remade itself after the decline of coal and steel into a center of high-tech medical research.

With Palin, however, the contempt for science may be something a little more sinister than the bluff, empty-headed plain-man's philistinism of McCain. We never get a chance to ask her in detail about these things, but she is known to favor the teaching of creationism in schools (smuggling this crazy idea through customs in the innocent disguise of "teaching the argument," as if there was an argument), and so it is at least probable that she believes all creatures from humans to fruit flies were created just as they are now. This would make DNA or any other kind of research pointless, whether conducted in Paris or not. Projects such as sequencing the DNA of the flu virus, the better to inoculate against it, would not need to be funded. We could all expire happily in the name of God. Gov. Palin also says that she doesn't think humans are responsible for global warming; again, one would like to ask her whether, like some of her co-religionists, she is a "premillenial dispensationalist"—in other words, someone who believes that there is no point in protecting and preserving the natural world, since the end of days will soon be upon us.
Videos taken in the Assembly of God church in Wasilla, Alaska, which she used to attend, show her nodding as a preacher says that Alaska will be "one of the refuge states in the Last Days." For the uninitiated, this is a reference to a crackpot belief, widely held among those who brood on the "End Times," that some parts of the world will end at different times from others, and Alaska will be a big draw as the heavens darken on account of its wide open spaces. An article by Laurie Goodstein in the New York Times gives further gruesome details of the extreme Pentecostalism with which Palin has been associated in the past (perhaps moderating herself, at least in public, as a political career became more attractive). High points, also available on YouTube, show her being "anointed" by an African bishop who claims to cast out witches. The term used in the trade for this hysterical superstitious nonsense is "spiritual warfare," in which true Christian soldiers are trained to fight demons. Palin has spoken at "spiritual warfare" events as recently as June. And only last week the chiller from Wasilla spoke of "prayer warriors" in a radio interview with James Dobson of Focus on the Family, who said that he and his lovely wife, Shirley, had convened a prayer meeting to beseech that "God's perfect will be done on Nov. 4."
This is what the Republican Party has done to us this year: It has placed within reach of the Oval Office a woman who is a religious fanatic and a proud, boastful ignoramus. Those who despise science and learning are not anti-elitist. They are morally and intellectually slothful people who are secretly envious of the educated and the cultured. And those who prate of spiritual warfare and demons are not just "people of faith" but theocratic bullies. On Nov. 4, anyone who cares for the Constitution has a clear duty to repudiate this wickedness and stupidity.

Yet, she's all about giving money to the responsible parents of autistic children. What a liar, twisting words to suit herself. And, it's funny how the rats are deserting the "r" ship.

Dear Person-

When you take money from one person and give it to another who has not earned it, it is redistribution. If you choose to refer to it as spreading the wealth around, be my guest. However, by continuing to do so, keep in mind how incredibly foolish it looks in print.

I spread my wealth,(and I use the term loosely), around by contributing to charity, volunteering to help the disadvantaged, making it not only a seasonal gesture, but a part of my life.

Try a little research and independent thinking, MPAD. Perhaps then I'll be able to respect your view, even if I don't adopt it as my own.

EMV -- Maybe if I talk slowly, you'll understand: Nobody is taking your money away from you.
Except maybe John McCain, when he taxes your health care benefits.

"Spreading the wealth around" can also be defined as "Giving EVERYBODY a chance." As opposed to only giving just Bush's (and McCain's) billionaire buddies the tax breaks.

If you are making $250,000 a year or more, then bless you. And you can afford an extra couple of hundred out of the huge tax breaks Bush has given you to go back to pay for this great country that has given you a chance to be so successful.

And if you're not making a quarter mil a year, go to http://taxcut.barackobama.com/ (Or just click here.) and take a look at how much better you'll make out when Obama's President.

Riggstad said...

PA Dem,

Lets define who gets taxed. First it was those who make more than $250k a year. Then Biden said $150k a year. Not just Bush's billionaires.

You write these replies with verbiage that just does not address the point.

So you are either spinning, or truly do not understand what income redistribution stands for. (and yes, Joe Biden himself spoke about income redistribution, using those exact words in several interviews. He said it was time to be patriotic for goodness sake.)

So I will type this as slowly as possible. (relax, I'm kidding)

The issue at hand is not the fact that they will be taking our money.

The issue is the reason why they are taking our money, and the explanation, and reasons of why they are taking more of our money.

You have written about giving other people a chance. You think taking more money from the people who have done more with their time, have been more productive, and have had more success is going to give people more of a chance?

Now, you will state that all the richest people and the successful people are lucky, have been born into it, have had advantages that others just don't have, etc.

All BS really, and just more spin. There is a certain percentage of people that have been born into money, as much as there is a certain percentage of people who are unable to gain any traction because of circumstances.

But this country was built on people, of all classes, having the freedom to gain their own wealth. Capitalism. Most people earning between $50k to $500k are all self made. Whether they are doctors, or small business owners, or corporate management. Whatever path they have chosen to pursue their dreams.

I used to think that people in both parties wanted the same things, just had different views and processes on how to go about it.

I'm not so sure anymore. Believe me when I tell you that I am none to happy with how the republican party has performed in the last 4 years. And I'm not so sure that the GOP will ever be the same. It has turned into a trainwreck, that's for sure.

But when I look at the fundamentals that each side has presented during this election, I can't, as an American, stand by and let one party decide that we become a socialistic nation. That is not what this country was built on. It also quells the peoples ferver for breaking their backs to achieve what so many others have done to build this country.

For me, aside from everything else, that is the most important issue at hand for this election.

Change is good. But a total reversal of idealology, from what the founding fathers fought for, for the sake of that change, is unacceptable.

You can try to convince me that this is not socialism, you can ignore what path it really starts us on. The bottom line is, be careful what you wish for. I too, desire change. But I am not willing to sacrifice economic freedom to do it.

Consider the economy. I cannot find any difference between what McCaine would do and what Bush has done. Appropriate regulation (McCaine has historically been for deregulation) could have prevented the excesses of the subprime, credit default swaps mess. The debt our children and grandchildren will bear is due to the mistakes of the last 8 years. Additionally, the possibility of Palin as our president is truly scary. We need a change.

Yes, I'm afraid he is taking us down the socialism track and I don't like it at all. We do not need a President with a BIG WISH LIST that we are unable to financially support and then tell us that we should share the wealth (distribution). Sorry, I worked many years for what I have and now I just want to sit in my chair and read/view the world as it should be - safe, well educated and health - no need for a lot of $$$.

You're wealth isn't being redistributed in this instance. This is a temporary issue being resolved in a way that both parties feel is a necessary step. the money isn't being taken from one group of people to be sent to antother group of people.

It's being taken from everyone to help bail out an industry who took advantage of new legislation that was signed into law by Clinton in 1999. No, I'm not blaming Clinton, because it passed the senate unanimously, but the legislation allowed for specualtion, Once again, in the markets.

This is not the Evil Doing of Bush and Republicans. This is the Evil doing of Greed that everyone had a part in during the stock booms throughout the 90's.

If you want a Democratic White houes, just say so. It's ok. But don't spout talking points without knowing the facts behind them.

And those rich gambling bankers... I thik the guy who heads one of those companies is is a staunch supporter, and major contributor of Senator Obama.

I know I'm behind you because of the poor circumstances I was born in to and the lack of opportunities, not to mention bad choices I made. But I'll challenge you to walk in my shoes for one month and see how you manage. Believe me, I am working my tail off and getting nowhere fast. I'm not asking for a hand out but I would like to be able to spend more time with my kids, eat better food, go to the doctor when I need to instead of when I can afford to ( which is never) and have some money for eduction. Giving me a tax break would help a little. Giving tax breaks to those who are already wealthy and companies that don't deserve it, isn't fair. My vote is for Obama who I think understands that I am working hard and could use a little help. Cleaning offices and working at a UPS store isn't paying my bills and I'm sure those are 2 jobs you'd never take anyway. You should thank me for doing them so you don't have to. I'll be happy to take over your job if you want to offer it up.

I suppose the USA will always have those who care ( Democrats), and those who care only about themselves ( Republicans). I'd like to leave this world being one of those who not only cared, but did something to help others in need. When's the last time a Republican championed a social program to help someone less fortunate? Unless you count big oil companies as "less fortunate". What is the tax break I'd be getting with McCain? Oh, there isn't any. What's the tax break I'd be getting with Obama? Oh, $800. I think I'll take a page from the R's and start looking out for myself. My vote is for Obama.

What I do know is all the first names & their childrens' names and in what situation they are in (health/financial). Some of my relatives have married quite a few times as is the case in most families today. But, I do care for them and would never leave them go without housing, here or in Canada. I believe Obama has shown he knows that his Aunt Z was living here in the USA and was not a citizen and was being taken care of by the state of Mass. Now, why would he not have helped her with all his money and knowledge of the laws on immigration? She should have been deported to Kenya - back to Africa. We should have taken it to Afghanistan and Pakistan, not Iraq. The Republicans will have you believe that we're fighting the terrorists in Iraq. Yes, now we are because we invited them in by starting a war where there didn't need to be one. Good job Bush, Cheyney, Rumsfeld. I would really like to see the footage of the day we decided to invade Iraq again so that the people of this great country remember that we didn't go there because of terrorism and that there wasn't any aggression toward the US on behalf of Iraq. There was no genocide, no request for our help, no need to go there in attack mode. We went there to eradicate their non-existant weapons of mass destruction. Boy people have really become stupid over the last several years. We're a bunch of chickens. I say "bring it on terrorists and watch us squash you in the sand hole you live in." Iraq has been a big waste of time, money and soldier's lives. I can't wait until Obama sends our troops to where they should have been in the first place. AFGHANISTAN!!! Maybe I'm the only one here, Montco Dem, but despite being solidly middle class, I really don't care whether or not I'M better off as a result of somebody's tax (or no tax)policies. I'm looking at, is the COUNTRY going to be better off with one or the other in office. All the issues, not just monetary ones. Not just 'me me me'. I tend to look at what's best for ALL, not just myself. And for me that answer is John McCain. COUNTRY FIRST.

As far as wealthy bankers 'redistributing' or 'spreading wealth' around, you reveal a fundamental misunderstanding of the financial crisis' origins. People taking on more debt/mortgages than they could afford, and defaulting. Yes, 'greedy' bankers forced to make such easy money available to people who should not have qualified for it in the first place hedged their bets, and packaged it up and sold it off as securities, to get such risky debt off their books. Wouldn't you do the same if you were forced to do something you knew was a poor lending practice? Of course it was all going to snowball at some point. That's what happens when a Democratic president enacts a program that allows this kind of financial idiocy to take place. And now it's everybody's problem? Give me a Republican in office any day over a Democrat, who only know how to 'fix things' by throwing more money at it.

Obama doesn't have to help his Aunt. And, why should he have to help his relatives anyway? He wasn't raised with them and didn't meet them until about 20 years ago. Just another put down by an ignoramus.

About the Mother of three. You don't know her circumstances. My Mother got divorced and raised 5 children by working 3 jobs and she went back to college. It was a struggle, but she made it and so did we. I never asked for a hand-out, welfare or any government or charity money. I've own my property since the 80's, not including vehicles that I bought with my own money, working while going to college myself. Just because you and others want to slander people because they are voting Democratic or are single, just shows your negative outlook on human beings. Yet your kind likes to promote Christianity and the like and put down people who don't look like you or are of another race or religion. Just a bunch of hypocrites that make up the lousy portion of Montgomery County.

Where Are The Fathers???
Anonymous - Please understand that many women face the responsibility of raising their children because a husband/lover decided - it's not my responsibility. So.. Where are the FATHERS?? Our laws need to be fixed/changed because there seems that no one is willing to face the fact that because "a man has to do what a man has to do"...and not share the consequences. Can't find work? Maybe our local offices are not following up on cases pending to see where this "Father" is spending his time?? We really do need to get real and that means both Rep. & Dem. during your daily contacts, report these "Fathers" that are spending their time in Bars or Racing Establishments...if they can't work and pay support...they should not have pleasure money while his family does without.
